You know how Magnum, P.I. always told us to listen to our little voices? Well, why don't we? Sometimes things just click, go easy, hot knife through butter, unstoppable and a gas!
Hula Island is where all of these forces flow for me. This site is my attempt to listen to my spirit, get out of the rut and into the groove; to be creative, free and alive.
My hope is to pass along this feeling to you.
For the past 17 years, I have been a painter, painting, as my good friend Deryl Day would say, just about everything except bridges. While I have enjoyed the comradery of the trades and been fortunate and successful, I am driven to learn and be more creative.
Initially, I thought I might be a rock and roll star. HA! Well, writing music and love for the mountains pulled me off the UCLA campus in 1981. Two years of dream skibumming in Aspen, Colorado led me back to Carmel, California to regroup and get some dinero for the next winter. Jobs were hard to come by and I wound up painting in Carmel, meeting my wife and having two amazing sons.
So here's the tough part. How to be a good Dad, loving husband, make a living and follow your dreams. The choice always came down to money for me and putting food on the table. I pressed on. The overwhelming feeling of not following what seems so obviously natural for me was extremely confusing. I rationalized this by saying, GOTTA PAY MY BILLS! The frustration of not doing what I really enjoy is bound to filter into every part of my life. No more...
I'm going for it. I may look back at this and shake my head, laugh or cry. I will not look back and say I should have tried.
By the way, I'm learning to fly so support this website and help me put the hula island logo on the tail of a nice airplane! :)
Good luck to all of you.
